with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. time is running out on a fiscal cliff deal, and republicans are running out of reasons to reject the president's plan. house speaker john boehner left capitol hill this evening and met with the president at the white house for nearly an hour. administration officials and boehner's spokespeople say that the meeting was frank. president obama earlier today spoke with minneapolis television station wcco and left no confusion about why talks are stalled. >> the big problem right now is that republicans in the house are resistant to the idea of the wealthiest americans paying higher tax rates. >> speaker boehner held his own news conference this afternoon. he was there to provide serious answers to questions about tax cuts, extensions to the middle class. >> will you permit a vote on a bill that -- if we go over the cliff, would you permit a vote to decouple that and then fight again on the debt ceiling? >> ifs, ands, and buts are like candy and nuts. pp if it were like that every day would be christmas. >> he sure sounds like a negotiator with ans

at the top of the hour to tell us about the fiscal cliff clayen. jacki schechner healthcare geek. i ahead an article on the hill, we should warn the cockles -- leave medicaid out of the talks. liberals are pressing to take medicate off the table in deficit reduction talks. you talked about this in our last jacki's healthcare corner. >> the medicaid expansion is interesting because part of the way that we're going to get everybody covered is expanding medicaid up to 133% of poverty. that's part of the affordable care act. and the president and the administration are being very strong right now about insisting that states have to follow the law to a t and not be able to implement it incrementally or partially. so not only leave it out of the talk but the administration is holding firm right now and insisting that this medicaid expansion either take place in its entirety or not at all. >> stephanie: i wound up the healthcare bot. >> sorry. give us. on the politics? >> i will. let me the discordant note. the republicans, as my colleagues point out, absolutely have a terrible hand. 30% favorable, 45% unfavorable. when asked to say a single word or phrase about either party, 65% give a negative word about republicans -- small, petty, and hencintransigent, whatever. the hand is weak. here is the problem for the administration -- if they come out with the victory and take a victory lap and to an end zone dance and rub it in, it is going to do and the chances of doing anything for the next two to four years. i think republicans have now accepted that the rates are going to go up. john boehner has problems there. i just wonder and hope that there is a sensitivity in the white house. >> mar has stumbled on the truth. [laughter] >> any way you get there is great. >> i would say "staggered." absolutely right, the president feels so strong that he has offered nothing. john boehner cannot go back and say to raise rates. he has offered to raise revenues through loopholes. but the president has taken this very arrogant, hard-line,
